Vieux Système – malting and distilling in the 19th century
March 25 to November 4, 2012
During the 19th century, Belgian genever production ran at full speed. As of the first industrial revolution, distillers started to produce in a more efficient way thanks to the steam generators and machines. With the Cellier-Blumenthal heating column, they were able to distil continuously and with less energy. New, cheaper material like sugar beets, beet molasses, and potatoes reduced production costs.

High tech
Distillers transposed Dubrunfaut's and Pasteur's research to their yeast and spirit plants. They were able to massively produce cheap, neutral alcohol.
This generated a great boost for the sector: follow the company history of, among others, the agricultural distillery Van Damme in Balegem and the industrial spirit factory Dumont in Chassart (Walloon Brabant).
